This made her very mad. What was I to do? I had no other choice but to get suited in my computer surgeon attire and fix this laptop myself. I headed on over to Laptop Screen, a website that sells many replacement screens for many brands of laptops and ordered a replacement for this model, and switched out the screens on my own. I'm going to go over the easy process of replacing the screen of this HP Pavilion DM4 so that if you so happen to find yourself in the same situation, you can fix it yourself too.
Tools Required:
- 1 Tiny Phillips Screwdriver
- 1 Tiny Flathead Screwdriver
Step 1 - Remove Screen Frame
In order to find the correct screen, I had to first remove the broken one from the the device. Before doing any work on the laptop, please turn it off and remove the battery. Place the laptop on a flat surface and look on the bottom left and right hand corners of the screen frame. You should see two rubber circles, these cover the screws that grant you access to the screws that hold the screen in place so that you can remove it.
Remove the rubber circle with one of the screwdrivers and remove the screw as well. It's in a bit of an awkward angle so be careful to not strip the screw.
The bottom part of the frame has some glue that might require a little more effort to remove but should be relatively easy to take off.
Step 2 - Removing The Screen and Identifying Model Number
So by now you should end up with something that looks like this.
There are 4 screws, one in each corner that attach the screen to the laptop. Remove each one carefully. Once they are all removed, pull the screen towards you from the TOP. Be very careful here because you can tear the connecting wires that allow the screen to communicate with the laptop which are located on the bottom of the screen. There should be a model number on the back of the screen, take note of this because you will want to order one that matches this broken one. Mine was the B140XW03 V.0.
Carefully detach the wire from the screen and remove the screen and place it somewhere where it wont get in your way.
Step 3 - Installing The Replacement Screen
If you made it this far then you are almost done! The next step is to (very carefully) align the new screen with the metal frame and attach the connecting pin to the screen. It should slide in very easily. The rule of thumb here is to not force anything into place as this could damage the connecting pins thus causing a bigger problem.
Once you have connected the screen to the frame, push the screen back so that it is flush with the frame and begin to screw it back into place. Then place the plastic cover back onto the screen and snap the edges in and reattach the two screws at the bottom corners. The screen will most likely have a clear plastic cover on it, do not be dumb like me and forget to remove it -.-
There you go! That is how I replaced a HP Pavilion DM4 display. Remember, you can get your replacement from www.laptopscreen.com. Good luck!
